I finally watched the movie Hillbilly Elegy. First of all, I know many people who've picked themselves up by the bootstraps when in fact they had the same kind of background and upbringing as JD Vance. Secondly and most importantly, I've been quite disappointed in the fact that Vance says almost nothing about what he learned, experienced, and gained from his time in the US Marine Corps. There was one reference to his Marine Corps time in the movie which barely lasted 10 seconds. I know personally as someone who spent 45 years with the military that JD's time as a Marine is what propelled him into the strong individual he is and this had far more relevance to his life than anything old MeeMaw did, and I say this with respect for what she did do as she stepped in in his later years giving him shelter and her version of love prior to his departure in the Marine Corps. He'd not have gone to Ohio State or Yale if it hadn't been first for the time in the US Marine Corps. Annoyed Vance hasn't given it more air time, and much more credit for shaping who he is today.

@openminded4751 that’s completely irrelevant. Length of service doesn’t equate to impressive stellar character. Obviously as we see from his opponent. That’s my point. The truth is Vance owes almost everything to the USMC. He was a wimpy abused law breaker as a kid (cheats on a urine test, steals a calculator) and the US Marine Corps straightened his butt out and good. What the corps instills into young people cannot be properly quantified; it’s that integral to who you become from the call to service in the most forward deployed entity the U.S. has. Meemaw was just another enabler.

@mistresskate9799 that’s true, and that’s because he got a brotherhood, a Family, that had his back and trained him to know what America stands for & what the character of a Marine looks like.
