The Stuart Highway rocks, way back in the 80's I found that I could hit the pin on the speedo of my 1969 Pontiac (429 V8) I will never do that again. only got 185km out of a 80L tank, more speed = more fuel

I did it in 80, 81. lots of fun. Started in Sydney, took 22 months, had to stop and work to make more money along the way

@Goatcha_M That's like my old GPS, it has a fit when I'm driving on a new highway, it thinks I'm over the speed limit in a paddock, telling me to turn back. who ever said you can never upset a computer 👹

"A" is the federal highway network, eg: A1 to A23. A1 takes a lap all around Australia, just north or Sydney it' also called the M3 and that is the name short for Motorway 3. Because it had a toll at one time it' called a Motorway, A Freeway never had a toll. Back in the 1990's the F4 "Freeway 4" was changed to the M4 "Motorway 4" because of the Sydney Games in 2000, Over 15km of 6 lane Motorway had to be layed. So a toll was put on the road to pay for it. M & F can never have the same number. All highways, Motorways ect in the ACT are classed as "A" and the numbers start at A24 and go up. A highway is the the main street in many small towns, but a Motorway or Freeway will bypass it. We can not use the same system as the USA because our states are so bloody big, each state has it's own network aswell. When you get a good highway map the key tells you all you need to know.

@skullandcrossbones65 Called M5, no longer a Freeway a toll was added back in the 90's when the missing bit from Liverpool to Sydney was put in

@Goatcha_M take a look at the map, The Hume Highway is still the main street in some towns and the Motorway bypasses. A good place to see this at the Sydney end, the old Highway still goes the same way and ends at Ashfiled but the motorway takes a new rout to the Sydney Airport about 20km away

@carisi2k11 Princes hwy starts at St Peters, at the rail crossing it's King St on the other side Time for some schooling macquarie st liverpool is the hume hwy, the old st sign @ lachlan & macquarie was still up in the 1980's, what you call the hume hwy is the liverpool bypass The M5 from liverpool south was renamed "Hume hwy" most of the way at the same time the hume hwy was renamed "old hume hwy" then renamed "camden valley way" I grew up in liverpool, spent time drinking at the liverpool hotel, Watched Big W burn down and loved going to the liverpool speedway one other thing you forgot the M3 was renamed to M1, M1 was only in Sydney till bloody Queensland had to have a M3 and it made a mess all round, so the M3 to newcastle was renamed "M1" I'm an old fart and I know thing about the past, now if I could only workout how to use my phone
