  1. Toronto, 2005: Same airport, Air France jet with 309 aboard crashed on landing. Result: Broken in half in a ravine. Immediately broke out in a spectacular blaze. Same as yesterday: No fatalities. Minor injuries due to jumping out to escape. Moral: Always choose Toronto for the flaming crash which destroys your airliner.

Journalism has now been invaded by a second consecutive generation of j-school graduates without a strong command of language, or talent for thinking. They see language as cushions to relax on, not cutlery to prep thoughts with.

  29. You could, alas, find something different at The Global Times, the SCMP's sister publication. (But don't.) The SCMP was a newspaper with an old, well-earned reputation outside HK. Now, under a new owner and subject to CCP oversight, it is a mixture of news and pro-CCP propaganda. This is a way to attract some Western readers while at the same time propagandizing to them. Think of it like money-laundering, only it's news-laundering.
