  1. I made it through the pandemic sort of like that. On its scientific aspect — which of course ought to have been its most important one, but turned out not to be — I ignored journalism as much as possible. I instead spent more than a few hundred hours reading journal articles, watching talks given by scientists and doctors at well-reputed universities or hospitals, listening to panels of them discussing things on podcasts. (But it's a problem for a lot people that they don't know even the basics of how to read a paper. Their understanding of the article's content may not repay the effort of reading it.) Btw, I do think the media changed a lot. Not so long ago neutrality was quite strictly observed. Most people would sneer when a reporter for a 'quality' news outlet gave an opinion in a news article or TV report. Viewers were not there to be schooled in their values by journalists. Well, some were, but it was a seeming minority in contrast to today's seeming majority. Thanks for your comment.

  5. If you don't like the terms of the contract, don't sign the contract. If the contract says the production company owns the footage forever, your feelings ten years later don't matter.  Or if they do matter, then how about the other party's feelings? They could come along ten years later and say "We wish we hadn't made that video with you in it, so give us back the wages we paid you." If you're 18 and you sign a contract, you can't go back later and say "Oh, I wasn't mature enough to know" etc. and then when you don't get your way, say "It's so unfair!" It's clear even to an 18-year-old what a contract is, even if they're not of average intelligence. A contract is a binding promise. What's this about how things are "terrible" or "unfair"? Francis, I never hear you talk like this about choices people make. Are you flirting with this porn actress?

Good faith doesn't mean that when Konstantin and Francis walk up to you with smiles and handshakes, armed with friendly reasonableness, you're not going to tell them with a smile to sod off. The two of them seemed almost high.

On things like vaccine passports his thinking wasn't nearly so much in line with actual scientific evidence and reasoning as simply strident, overbearing, sanctimonious, lightly-informed and other terrible things besides. And here he is, being just as overbearing, sanctimonious and pompous in retreat. The damn fellow is clearly in a lifelong love affair with himself.

It always denotes a movement which cherrypicks some of the concepts of an earlier one and then adds a few new ones, ordinarily resulting in a jumble. It doesn't cohere nearly as well as the original, but that doesn't stop it from attracting some enthusiasts. In the case of the Neo-Marxists you can easily do your own analysis. To give you a start, clearly they've dropped any of Marx's objections to private property. Class levelling is the last thing on their minds, and except for a scattered few them, they are even mum on tax cuts for the rich. Their novel contribution is their emphasis on race, sexual orientation, and sex. Take it from there yourself. It's not hard going. As for 'fundamentalist', I meant it not in the literal sense of any slavish devotion to Marx's works, and regret leaving it open to misinterpretation. I used it just as a generic term for intolerant obsessiveness and rigid fanaticism.

Thus the most important words are the most difficult to make out. Frustrating. I must say I'm tired of hearing about how dissatisfied women are. I've had to hear about it every day of my life. They've got the power, status, money and freedom they demanded and just complain more and more and more. Do they never tire of their own complaining? It appears not, and it appears that this is because complaining is richly rewarded.

As for that word having roots in Latin, it sort of goes without saying. Most words in the English language can be traced back to Latin through French, which I find interesting, and indeed I know thousands of Latin roots. But interesting doesn't equate to important in every case. As a term in linguistics it retained its sense of male vs. female anyway.

It's irrelevant to the name Lehman Brothers, which was an American bank, not a German one. Its name was not pronounced LAY-mən, as anyone with any knowledge of global finance and investment knew, and knows. Just so you know, the American beer Budweiser is pronounced BUD-wyze-er, not BOOT-vyze-er. And Heinz (the ketchup company) is hynz, not hynts.   44. You're wrong about that. Ukrainians overthrew a guy who f.ed them over as much as it is possible to do. He campaigned and won on aligning Ukraine with Europe. It was unequivocal. Then the minute he was sworn in he announced that, no, instead Ukraine would align itself tightly with Putin. The country was furious and got him the f. out of there in a hurry. I don't doubt that the US pulled one or two strings to aid Ukrainians at the time, and I'm glad if they did. If they hadn't, Ukraine might not exist today except as a Russian province. If you're not fond of Putin and his lies you should find ways to defend your mind against him and them.

I started by asking Why can't everyone just look after themselves and never mind telling others what to do, say, or be? After all, I went on, improving the world should mean improving oneself and it should end there, full stop. Now Richard comes along to say it "absolves you of responsibility" and he ties it into untreated or improperly treated psychological afflictions. Noice. 3) I like how the replay graph is all squiggly. It shows people are replaying the most interesting bits so they can absorb them better, or just to savour them. (I refer to that graphic feature embedded in the video progress bar that shows viewing time, including "Most replayed".)

She felt compelled to respond but had nothing at all to actually say, so she settled for replying blandly "I'm sure there are answers to that in a briefing book somewhere." (Briefing books are government policy manuals containing background information, commonly in the form of talking points.) It was enough for her to stand for the belief without knowing why.

Also, let's see the return of the Boy Scouts. Just the fact that somebody doesn't like sex exclusion isn't enough. There should have to be proof of substantial harm. The urge to micromanage everybody's lives, which in this day is mushrooming totally unrestrained, has got to be beaten back before life and society lose every shred of their charm.
