  5. It's interesting how there's no protest against AI development when there's such a strong lobby against carbon pollution. Zero, for something poised to wipe us out in a decade or two, versus the world's number one concern, for something that will warm Earth slightly and make the oceans one metre deeper over the next century.

  6. It's almost certainly untrue that this war will speed the move away from carbon energy. This would happen only with a quick withdrawal by Russia and the overthrow of Putin, the odds of which are very low. No, stability and prosperity are the keys to a fast transition to renewable energy, and we can expect this war to bring huge increases in instability, impoverishment and desperation. The future of coal is suddenly burning much brighter.

  13. It's wetware running on a system based on hormones, neurotransmitter, and instincts that leads to evil. Create something that's all mind and no body, so to speak, and you've got something that's probably profoundly different. Put your religious mindset to work realizing that we're creating something closer to an amoral and artificial God (possibly on a dog leash, possibly not) ---- than to an immoral monster with motivations recognizable as human-like.

  14. It's a matter of understanding media itself. Understand media and you can consume it to your benefit, because you'll know exactly how to take what you're reading, watching, or listening to. But it's a long road. To work on understanding media, you have to already be well on your way with politics, business, history, economics & finance, sociology, psychology, and philosophy. Those are in no order, and art, science, and technology also are probably indispensable. One other thing: "Take care that your light be not darkness." (M. Arnold) You will waste your efforts unless you look closely into ideas opposite to your own and scrutinize them for merit. If you find merit there, accept it, disturb you though it may.

Btw, in that chart where's the 1976 China earthquake? I seem to remember a death toll of half a million. So, yeah, we may have some very energetic data massaging in this chart. Cheers.
