This is why "progressives" and no-limits liberals carefully avoid the word, despite its being upheld as a cardinal virtue for millennia. So they opt for empathy, a far vaguer word which they make into a cudgel by defining it any way they like. The shrewd cunning is endless.

  3. I thought that fairly central to F was a conscious, emphatic commitment to brutality. Rather than brutality for its own sake, the idea would be that (1) without it, no society or civilization can attain to great heights; (2) a great society/civilization which dispenses with it cannot avoid decay and collapse. I read this ten or 20 years ago.

  4. It isn't, as our guest asserts, anti-free-speech or snowflake-y to be up in arms over what someone's said. If it were, then his mere saying that would itself be anti-free-speech and snowflake-y. (Anyway, free speech is about the prohibition of laws limiting speech, except for those against libel, direct incitement to crime, etc. Cancel culture is a separate problem.)
