Thanks, Science, for always telling me what to believe! (Until you tell me not to believe it anymore.)

@Freak80MC That's ideal science, I agree. But then there's science as it's done. Similar relations exist between ideal justice and the version of justice in the courts, ideal love and love in real life, ideal parenthood and.... well, you get the idea. Science is perhaps the best of a bad lot. Then again, as you and Prof. Ioaniddis might reply, we have ourselves to blame for disappointed expectations in all of those categories if we put them on too-high pedestals in the first place, since life is not ideal. So your point was a good one to make.

@elena6516 The New Church, populated by the New Puritans.

And they both went to Queen's for engineering, then went to another country for physics degrees.

@Rockyzach88 You caught me cold, like a pitcher who hasn't warmed up, but I think I endorse all that. Thanks for your reply.

@utilitymonster8267 Great. That takes in a lot and handles it well, the best part being the second-last sentence. That's the part that hurts, because that's vicious-circle Catch-22 part that complicates it unpleasantly while explaining a lot. But the whole comment is quite true. You don't blog somewhere, do you (under a name not made of punctuation marks)?

I'm a David Bowie enthusiast but planet nine should be named Telos. Also, be prepared for a non-Westerner to find it and call it something hard to say and spell.

Alas, the Nobel Foundation has devised no category in which Professor Ioannidis can be nominated for a prize for his services to science. It's a pity.

The solution is to not expect human enterprise to be infallible. Peer-reviewed science is merely our cleanest pair of dirty underwear.
1
Human being, Sam A.: Human being writes statement pointing out that statements of human beings can be false. Feel the overwhelming irony.
1
"My country, right or wrong", went the jingoistic British slogan. "Science, right or wrong" might be yours. Mine is "My mother, whoring on the streets on crack or sober at home with me and Dad".

So peer-reviewed science is the cleanest dirty shirt. A latin motto to this effect ought to be devised, and nailed above the door to every lab and every science classroom, right beside any one that says 'veritas' or anything of that sort.

Guy uses language to say that something someone else said using language is questionable. Crushing irony.
1
So wait, you're a human being pointing out that when a human being points out that things other human beings say might be false, it might itself be false? How ironic. I shall certainly disregard it.

Shut up and give us our funding.

It doesn't matter. What matters is they fit in well in their future faculties.

@fuNaN89 At times very trying.
