@edwilli222 Complacency, or even just a desire not to seem paranoid, might easily be the end of a free society. In time, you won't be able hide from "this stuff" by avoiding social media, nor even by withdrawing to the remote countryside. Like they went looking for the hapless kulaks, they'll come looking for you. Don't be paranoid, but don't wait till you see the whites of their eyes.

You chose it. ) So you're not only a childish senior citizen, you sound like a Marxist to boot. Nothing matters but exploitation! No such thing as talent, effort, likability, or conscientiousness. No way for people to mess up their lives by way of stupidity or slacking off. Even luck doesn't exist, just cutthroat exploitation resulting in mass victimhood. Like Marx himself, Marxists are simply personality cases, themselves victims of psychological projection. He exploited everyone he could, even screwing his maid under his wife's nose, then denying paternity of the resulting child. Things like that were why he pointed fingers at others. "Everyone is out to exploit the weak," he would say, "except me." 'Right, I like the sound of that. Except me! Brilliant!' said you when you heard it. In fact, countless social and legal rules moderate people's inborn instincts to take mean advantage of one another. If it were not so, you'd have no right to stand up and chatter your nonsense about universal exploitation. The powerful would simply shut you up and you'd disappear. Funny, though, the systems of governance where things like that actually happen on an industrial scale are any based on Marx's teachings and those of his disciples. That's where the real meatpackers set up shop. Psychological projection again: 'I'd love nothing more than to dominate ruthlessly, so let's round up people and kill them, and say it's in order to make abuse a thing of the past.' Thanks, but no. A number of countries set a workable example of freedom within a framework of moderate regulation sufficient to restrain pirates, and taxes enough to level the playing field within reason. I agree those things should be supported. Beyond that, improving the world starts with a long look in the mirror. If you abuse the man you see there, no one cares, so have a go.

You're probably right. But NPDs and BPDs are often pretty charming, and today's young are almost uniformly charmless, so I don't know. Maybe it's time to name a new personality disorder.

Murray is right. The necessity for systematic de-Nazification of Germany by the Allies after 1945 has its counterpart in the necessity today for de-Woke-ification of companies, school boards, news media, politics, government bureaucracy, the entertainment industry, and the universities. Get them OUT.

@JakeSweeper Notice it all proceeds, the change in people over the generations, in a pretty smooth arc. Each generation is more fucked up than the one before, reliably and predictably. I think it's been going on since about 1850, although the seeds go back at least to the Renaissance, and then it really started with the Enlightenment. Technology is the driving force behind wealth and wealth drives change, however, so it was the Industrial Revolution that made it really take off. Society has gone pretty steadily in one direction ever since. If I'm not mistaken, the arc somehow started curving away in another direction around fifteen years ago. Some sort of equilibrium finally died and now the last 250 years look like a finished era.

Could the problem be as simple as a literal degeneration of the (Western) species? Have not the intelligent and the good-looking been reproducing at a lower rate than the stupid and the ugly for some decades now? Don't those fortunate people stand a much better chance at prosperity, sexual freedom, and a carefree life if they don't settle down as early and don't have as many children, or none at all, instead endlessly dating, travelling, and eating out? Don't people seem slower and stupider than a few decades ago? Doesn't it seem like good-looking people have become much less common?

The New York Times is indeed an activist rag, rather like the newsletter of a political party. But I encourage you to subscribe anyway, just to spoil the unanimity of its comments sections. I warn you, though: No matter how polite and decorous your comment, if it incisively and accurately spears the paper, its agenda, its idols, or its readership, the staff moderating comments will often just toss it in the trash. (I enjoy calling them TAs. ;) )
