  1. I appreciate your sympathetic instincts, but in a way you do a him a disservice, making him out to be some kind of pitiful wreck. I suspect that despite serious life challenges he always firmly believed in himself, and I doubt he needs anyone's pity. Someone else could make use of it though, like someone at your local homeless shelter.
