  1. Several years earlier the Britannia with Royals aboard visited my city, a Commonwealth metropolis. On a Saturday night during its stay, as our club threw a large party, dozens of its crew arrived in uniform outside the front door, unannounced. Evidently they were roaming about in search of fun. They had found it, for we of course invited them in, and our guests welcomed them warmly for drinking, loud conversation and dancing. The crewmen conducted themselves as one would expect, jovially and impeccably.

  4. Well then, perhaps vanity in a certain measure is not half as bad as people say, when it serves the right purpose at the right time. A shy and humble man, too, I daresay, is at times just the kind whom we need at our side, or even leading us, though not at others. Life and the world would be terrible if we all had the same propensities.
