Without it you can simply be put to bed without supper, i.e. be denied all rights and be treated as a four-year-old…forever. In fact, without it that's what will happen. Will. Gad realizes this, and that is why he insists liars and idiots must be allowed to say what they like, with absolutely minimal exceptions: libel and slander; incitement to riot, murder, suicide, or overthrow of the government; acts of mischief like yelling 'Fire!' in a crowded theatre, and that's about it.

  50. Universities are supposed to be places for exchanges of views, part of which involves making statements. And a lot of them, being adolescents, are eager to justify their claims to adult worth. (Some indeed are worthy, others not so much.) Beyond that, I would add that while I don't have in mind those who put the posters up, a large minority, perhaps even a majority of them, think that they're very important and that the world looks to them for moral guidance.
