It goes like this: 1. You learn about a psychological problem or psychiatric illness in brief. 2. You think you have it. But Psychology Student's Disease can be prevented, neatly enough, by hearing about the existence of Psychology Student's Disease.

  8. It takes a mental featherweight to say that the past doesn't have to matter. Doesn't matter, doesn't exist, can be cast off as a burdensome irrelevancy. It's like something out of a quack self-help book, but even less realistic, far sillier and far more dangerous. Allegorically I envision Harris' loose attachment to reality as her at an upper-story window: "Away with the lower floors! We don't need them up here." It's that loose.

It isn't, and all but a few of the worst liars end up in terrible straits before too long—whereas people whose habitual honesty has been verified by experience profit from a sound reputation. (May I toss in my take that Peterson, of whose videos I've watched a dozen or two hours, reaches---a thing necessary while thinking, permissible in private talk, and inadvisable in public. I mean I think he says things he's unsure of. Scruton seems to stick with what's firmly in his grasp. He seems on a steadier foundation of thought. Just a passing comment.)

I'm afraid you're not very good at this. I would suggest a program of serious reading, but I'm certain it's too late, so I advise you to do something else entirely. Most people can get places in cookery, and bike-riding is easy, cheap and fun. Both are harmless.

  19. Fine, but you don't know what 'civil society' means. Civil society does NOT mean 'a society characterized by niceness.' It does NOT mean 'social conditions of peaceableness, tolerance,' or any such things at all. It has the specific meaning "Those elements of organized society apart from government and business, taken as a whole." In other words, clubs, associations, political parties qua political parties, charities, bodies for professional regulation, amateur sporting organizations, and all the rest—even, in the very widest sense, families. I could go on but you must get it by now. Don't try to get fancy, just say "a good society", for I think that's what you meant.

  22.  @TheEgzi  They can get on the same wavelength in some areas. Unless, as he feared, Peterson suffered neurological damage while ill, I would imagine he just lacks intellectual muscle tone. For years now he's rarely been challenged except by nitwit journalists and scatterbrained activists. So this was no doubt good exercise for him. (It was, equally doubtless, boring and irritating at times to Dawkins, though.)

Frankly I find JP is in many ways a poor interviewer. He sprays out six questions at a time and only lets two of them be (half) addressed.

As a quibble I would point out that Valium and Xanax aren't in the same category as benzos; they are benzos. (Xanax is a benzo plus an extra molecule or something.) Last point: As with almost every addictive drug, lots of people can stop benzodiazepines with no real difficulty. Lots. Too bad scientists don't yet understand why, or we'd be much further ahead.

Once people have been convinced that their own society is no good, they'll gladly see it dismantled or destroyed, and replaced by something else. And they are highly unlikely to want to defend it from foreign interference or foreign attack, making the fomenting of oikophobia a top priority of hostile foreign countries. Next, one imagines: Species reassignment surgery done on 10-year-olds, with bits of their bodies used to fashion tails and peaked or floppy ears, snouts, etc., against the wishes of their mothers and fathers. No, wait, their "gestational parents" and "non-birthing parents." (Actual new cant terms.) Expect opposition to result in loss of custody.
