Confusingly, by the way, naphtha (or the spelling variant nafta) means variously crude oil, diesel, kerosene or gasoline in many languages around the world. In English it means a fractional product refined from petroleum, commonly used as a diluent in heavy crude which makes it easier to pump; also as 'camp fuel' and 'lighter fluid.'

  13.  Flawed-Awed-Gawed  It comes from petroleum, it's a thin liquid which smells similar to gasoline and it's mostly used to thin heavy crude so it's easier to pump on and off ships, through refineries and so on. They refine it back out of the crude later. People also use it in camping stoves and cigarette lighters of the wick type (like Zippos). It sounds like you've heard of naphthalene, which is a further derivative having numerous industrial uses. It used to be in mothballs, but not anymore.
