Oddly, there's no a sound or z sound in Hangzhou. It's pronounced hung-JOE. The Pinyin system of Chinese-romanized transcription is in many ways totally counter to English pronunciation. It's stoop id and it sucks.

Unless I missed it, the barrel-equivalent of 91,000 tonnes of naphtha is not given. It's 810,000 barrels. Confusingly, by the way, naphtha (or the spelling variant nafta) means variously crude oil, diesel, kerosene or gasoline in many languages around the world. In English it means a fractional product refined from petroleum, commonly used as a diluent in heavy crude which makes it easier to pump; also as 'camp fuel' and 'lighter fluid.'

"Nice naval escort you got there. Yep, really nice. Be a shame if anything happened to it." — Ukraine naval drone ops command 😄

@srcarranza Actually Cuauhtémoc has three syllables, not four: kwaw-'tem-ohk. (The stress is on tem, as indicated by the diacritical mark.)

In a display of customary New York City hospitality, the NYPD Harbor Unit showed up to offer free breathalyzers for all!

The RCAF motto is Per ardua ad astra, which means very nearly the same thing. (It is also the motto of the RAF, RAAF and RNZAF.)

@benstapley6077 It was a bit early in the day to be drinking, I should say.🙄

Well, it's a big place. For each Australian there are over a dozen Americans. But yeah, Australia runs pretty smoothly.

It doesn't matter to this story whatsoever. But you should have added that it is a sail training vessel, so as not to baffle readers on top of boring them.

I'm guessing Trump's entire trade agenda is about preparing America for the end of trade with China. That'll obviously be among the first consequences of war with China — and yes, I'm saying he appears to expect it.

The whole world suffers economically — and in other ways — if the sea lanes are not secure. I wonder if the US Navy is or has been considering intervention.

It's Baltimore, so I'm gonna say drugs. I may yet be proved right.

Flawed-Awed-Gawed It comes from petroleum, it's a thin liquid which smells similar to gasoline and it's mostly used to thin heavy crude so it's easier to pump on and off ships, through refineries and so on. They refine it back out of the crude later. People also use it in camping stoves and cigarette lighters of the wick type (like Zippos). It sounds like you've heard of naphthalene, which is a further derivative having numerous industrial uses. It used to be in mothballs, but not anymore.

Concerning motivation for the seizure: (1) You didn't notice that the ship now flies the flag of Palestine? (2) Rockets launched from Yemen have been exploding in Israel. (3) As you point out, it is believed that an Israeli has an ownership interest in the ship.

@wgowshipping Sorry, I missed that. I only watched you say that the motivation was unknown (my paraphrase).
