So Modi has publicly told Putin that the war should not be happening, but it buys oil and arms from Russia. It has rebuked China for the border violence, but when Modi attends BRICS meetings he is reasonably cordial with Xi. It works the other way around, too. It has entered a formal military alliance with the US (The Quad), yet it refuses to do entirely as the US would wish it to concerning Ukraine. As for Afghanistan, the US and ISAF never intended to conquer it, as such a thing is perennially impossible. Instead they stayed 20 years, which was long enough to make their point: If you host military training on your soil and then the US is attacked, you will get some very unpleasant guests who will stay for a very long time. The US left at a time of its own choosing, and the deterrent appears to have worked well all this time.

  234. Although you may have a good point, at the same time it's really a massive project to introduce a major tricky piece of hardware into a military. Countries ordinarily take years to handle it. Crews, ground crews, supply chains and facilities have to be planned and implemented very carefully and at great expense. If such a thing can be done in, let's say, 6 months, it is a real achievement, so it had better be done for the right plane. Possibly the other fighters, though of high quality and having certain advantages, just can't be scaled for the task, making it unwise to pour resources into a small parallel rollout of them. (But for all I know a 2nd fighter program will still happen at some point, and for the reasons you stated.)
