  3. In 1870 the US population (total < 39m) was 26% urban and 74% rural. And the bar for 'urban' was incredibly low: just 2,500. There were barely any large cities: only 100 towns and cities had at least 10,000 residents. Even this represented a sudden increase in urbanization compared to previous decades. In 1850, only 15% of the population was 'urban.' Hey, guess what else they had in 1870? Paragraphs and punctuation marks. Anyone who attended school through to 12th grade could read and write quite well.

The film attempts to make maximum hay out of the capture of a handful of Canadians, maybe to encourage Germans on the grounds that the Wehrmacht were making short work of a less formidable enemy. In reality the Canadians' landing went as well as that of the Americans and British, and in later weeks and months having to face their advance and onslaught was regarded as particular bad luck. [By outrageous coincidence, just as I finished typing the previous sentence, a formation of four aircraft which were clearly Second World War fighters flew only a thousand or two feet in the sky and barely a mile away, square in the sky out my window, eastwards above the shore of Lake Ontario. And here they are again already, a Remembrance Day week excursion perhaps from the museum in Hamilton. What a sight and sound.]
