  9. The Soviets did the heavy lifting to defeat Hitler. The Americans, their hands full with Japan and in no mood anyway to suffer great casualties and spend fortunes on a European war, would never have had much interest in battling Hitler without the Soviets in the war, desperate to save their own necks. For breaking the Nazis' backs, their prize was domination of the future Warsaw Pact countries. On this reading, the Soviets really saved western Europe. No Soviet rebuff of the German invasion, no D-Day. The Americans might have done nothing besides perhaps helping Britain survive.

Although it was reported around the world that Sir Patrick Vallance had touted the idea, it has since become clear that he never did. Thus it was --- again, as I have read in The Atlantic and elsewhere, but I do not call myself an authority --- an actual instance of fake news destined, one would hope, for instructional use in journalism schools.
