As a generality I would say equality wasn't the goal in the first place, domination was, even for those who didn't consciously realize it. Ordinarily, apparent equality-mindedness is an instrumental overlay atop the real instincts, desires and subconscious intentions. It is much to be regretted, but deep down we are really a master-and-servant species.
