  1. Simple answer: The real costs of weapons systems development are far higher than the voters (sorry, I mean the news media) would find palatable. Toilet seats don't cost $50k, it's the outrageously advanced and complex new stuff to keep China from taking over the world that's extremely expensive. And China is likewise spending vast undeclared sums. But no one talks about it in Chinese media for some reason.😄
