  3. Russia invaded the eastern part of Ukraine 9.5 years ago. Together with local Donbas residents who wanted to join Russia, they made war on the Ukrainian state. For Russians it was a war of invasion and annexation. For the Donbas belligerents it was a separatist war. Like any other invaded state, Ukraine attacked the invaders and separatists in return. And this self-defence you call "Ukronazi" crimes. That's warped.

  15. I've long noticed and long pointed out that politically Russia most resembles Africa. This of course means there's likewise a societal and even somewhat of a cultural resemblance. The link is feudalism. Under feudalism the rich and strong have a right to rule over the poor and weak, but have an obligation to protect them, while the poor and weak derive their security from offering their obedience. That's feudalism. Now, Russia passed about 75 years as the world headquarters of Communism, so you'd think that the Soviet state would've put paid to feudalism. But no, it didn't. Actually feudalism passed quite safely through that era. Recall for example commissars, whom you went along with and then things would remain all right with you and yours. (Orwell on the commissar: "Half gramophone, half gangster.")

It has a feudal societal and political outlook befitting medieval times. It has a lower-middle standard of living, excessively cold weather, and the highest murder rate in Europe (higher than the US). Other countries aren't jealous of Russia, they just don't respect it much, for the reasons I mentioned plus this obscene war.

It's a little town with many large and small buildings on vast grounds of dozens of square miles, like Versailles. Everything is insanely expensive, e.g, chairs that cost $30k or whatever. Let's say your nice house is worth $1m. To make it Putin-Palace-grade on your comparatively tiny scale (on the same footprint) you would have to rebuild it with additional floors on a budget of, say, $30m.

  39. It's the same in every country. Rural and small-town people with brains, talent and good looks sense that they can cut it in the city, so off they go. Since the remainder hardly dare dream of city life, their communities are depleted of those qualities. But such areas are also spared things like pretension, nauseating ambition and many other depravities commonly found in the metropolis. (The countryside does have its own set of depravities. But a case for it being the lesser of two evils seems to persist through the ages.) And so it will go, forever or until weeds grow up in city streets and trees sprout from rooftops.
