Nor can their funny haircuts, unusual eyeglass frames and wide socialist faces.

Well said, sir. I feel the same way myself.

Where I live, society and social life have lost nearly all their charm. Things were tanking ever since the turn of the century but now and ever since the start of the pandemic, very few people are pleasant anymore. There's been a collapse of personality, of manners, of sociability and everything that makes people worth being around.

@bryanutility9609 "1.5 billion Africans" That's higher by 1.0 billion since 1980. (The West is higher by 1.0 billion since 1790.) Current rate of increase: 2.25% annually. Africa, forecast population in 2100: 4.2 billion.

There's a lovely 1960s-80s, relaxed, intelligent, confident liberalism on offer here. In short, the pre-nonsense kind. Ahhhh. Soothes the soul.
6
@norbetjagamara5536 You haven't yet noticed the unholy alliance between progressives and neo-liberals. They do not attack each other, notice. They blend into one another. A perfect example is the 'news' channel and site CNBC.

@outoforbit00 Envy is not covetousness, the desire for that which someone else has. Not at all. Envy is the resentment of another person for having something which one does not oneself have. Envy is resentment, twisted ill-will, whether the envied party has ever wronged a soul or not. Indeed it's possible for the envier and the envied to never even have met, to have dwelt thousands of miles apart all their lives.

So is there a corresponding condition in women, autoandrophilia?

"People [...] look to have others do their thinking for them." Only when we're lucky. When we're not, the bozos come up with their own brilliant thoughts and cause as much damage as they can.
2
@martygriffith2135 Actually, what the US is doing is about precisely the opposite: Avoiding a war with Russia. The road to war is paved with appeasement. The art of peace is the art of deterrence.
2
Tobias Reiner Oh please, he didn't even come close to saying or letting on that 'all women are awful'. He said feminists are, and then challenged Ms. Loffler to do battle against them, correctly noting that the relative freedom to do so is her special privilege as a woman. You went immeasurably farther yourself in referring to "the few women who actually aren't awful."
2
@Ian I think you mistake his tone. It was not an attack; it was the issuing of a challenge—in somewhat bitter and skeptical terms, I grant you—whilst in a state of high dudgeon against others, not against her. She sounds level-headed and confident enough to take it the right way—i.e., as a point of view and challenge perhaps worth considering, expressed not fanatically or with animus but polemically.

I don't know about pillock, but PH can still be rather a pill at times. Not here though, except for mumbling into his shirt pocket like Prince Charles at times.

@ivywild628 They simply believe that dishonesty and incompetence in the institutions would be exposed effectively by the established news media. Since it hasn't been, it must not exist. Therefore any of your experts, and any media platform which features them, must be a bunch of uninformed and misinformed cranks, almost certainly having a scary agenda and backed, moreover, by forces of evil. They're probably in theory willing to look at it in an entirely different way, but only if confronted with clear and overwhelming evidence offered by sources or people they trust, but they would only trust those whom they already trust—so a change in their outlook is virtually impossible. Classic textbook Catch-22. Sound about right?

Don't forget about the Faculties of Education in the universities.

How does he figure inflation is 8.5%? (!) It's 3.7%. I can't conceive of any excuse for getting that number wrong.
1
@sratus Looking like Jonathan Bree, which isn't a bad way to go. (Cigarette Duet video, e.g.) But I don't see any goatee.

@thetruth156real3 "I will say no more." Then I will, though you left out little. It's a marvellous way to sweep into power. Hand out weapons actual or metaphorical, and the moral right to use them, and the world will beat a path to your door --- the door of your armoury, graduate seminar, bolshevik meeting. Countless fairly ordinary people will come out of the woodwork for the opportunity to beat up others on a moral pretext. It's mother's milk to the typical demented sort sick to death of repressing his or, just as often, her aggressions. You're familiar with cancel culture, of course?
1
Wow, this is a thread and a half.
1
@thetruth156real3 Good has nothing to do with being "nice" either. Some of the worst people I've known were "nice". In fact, niceness makes me wary. Faking goodness by being nice is just too easy, and is popular for that reason.

Only in 2022 did it dawn on me why it always seemed Russians were terribly bright people with well-developed minds. I was long aware that it was in part due to the glaring examples Dostoevsky, Solzhenitsyn, Chagall, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Chekhov, etc.; in part to the Soviet/Russian emigrés I knew. (Konstantin would've fit right in with them.) Turns out it was largely an illusion hinging on the fact that Russian dullards very seldom set foot outside Russia.
1
At the extremes you can't tell the left and the right apart. They both wear jackboots and swing cudgels. Extremes meet.

Thanks for the Global Times point of view.

Absurd. Foolish. What the US is doing is about precisely the opposite: Avoiding a war with Russia. The road to war is paved with appeasement. The art of peace is the art of deterrent.

@timothyofcox2450 I'll oppose unfairness against anyone. I can't, however, excuse your qualified support of fascism. None for me, thanks.
1
@timothyofcox2450 But you wrote "I don't mind fascism, when [etc.]" Write that without meaning it and you're just begging to be misunderstood. Whatevs.
1
@gdiwolverinemale2745 Which amounts to fighting extremism with extremism. That is just not for me. The sword if need be, but the pen for as long as possible. It tends to be mightier.

Anyone searching for the proximal origins of neo-Marxism in the West should watch the documentary (available here on YouTube) called Operation Infektion, released in 2018. Approx. 50 min., very watchable, very well produced to a good standard of thought, and guaranteed to surprise you. First released on the video section of New York Times website. (I know, shocker of shockers!)

Appetites is an even better word.👍 Instincts might be another. We need to inventory our instincts and appetites, examining each one to evaluate how salutary or self-injurious it is to follow or suppress it to any given extent. One might say the study of morality amounts to little more than that.
1
As I always understood it, equality of opportunity meant across groups of people with comparable aptitude and ability. Not a soul on earth wants the un-coordinated, ungainly and clumsy to have their fair shot at getting to the top of the ballet world. I appreciate your doggedness in pursuit of clear thinking but in my view you're much too literal-minded here.
1
In fairness, they've copied their playbook 100% from that of the radical feminists whom they, along with the rest of us, have been observing all their lives. In this way I consider that the feminists have been hoist with their own loathsome petard.

And never be anyone's disciple.

@goji059 Cf. Arty the Smarty, a children's book published in 1962 which I was lucky enough to get my hands on after my elder siblings were through with it. The opening bits about 'not running with the crowd' were what really stuck with me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIVZogtX1nA

@skp8748 If you want to know something like that, why ask me? Why on earth? You have an internet connection and you are operating a computer of some sort, so I think you are capable of looking it up yourself. Anyway, my slothful friend, Europe (west of Russia) along with North America (north of Mexico) are about the same in area as Africa. So, that kind of blows that, doesn't it? Have a nice day.😂
1
Quite right, activists. Journalism schools now teach that only activism is ethical, otherwise you're supporting patriarchy, elitism, capitalism, W suprmcy, etc. ("Silence is violence."🤮)
1
Konstantin, thanks for reading my mind. I agree that looks like the path out of the war. I actually think Trump will be quite aggressive and confrontational with Putin. (Most people think he adores him but actually he deals with him like he's a mafia don in Brooklyn or NJ who's in the hotel linen supply or construction business: cautiously, but with an eye to total victory.) The next most likely pathway is a some sort of crisis gripping Russia on account of the war. That's if it goes on another 12-18 months at least.
1
This is all just part of an ongoing transformation which for many, many years I've been calling The Great Dumbening.
1
It could never have happened without a merger, effectively, of the media and the state. Just let that sink in and reverberate a moment: A media-state merger. That's how a (maskless) little girl was pepper-sprayed in the face by a squad of police officers outside a mall. (I'm curious, by the way: did the Hon. Peter Costello stand up and say any of this at the time? )
1
The outro music is FAR too loud. Fix it.

I'm unclear why this hardware store assistant manager is taken seriously by anyone. (Every university commits blunders and the University of Chicago is no exception.) The countries of eastern Europe newly freed from the Russian Empire asked to join NATO because they were desperate for its protection. They know Russia. It's that simple.
1
Equality of outcomes isn't "what the Marxists are after." Make no mistake, they're after the access to social pinnacles which current arrangements rightly deny them. They want jaws to drop when they enter a room, fawning treatment from waiters, invitations to the choicest gatherings, preferential treatment for their children, and all the rest.
1
Vish and Devon, keep the noise down.

Konstantin Kisin for PM.

@ronaldjackson2290 There's probably a fallacy in that "17 of the first 25 states" figure. To measure the effect of "redness" vs. "blueness" you'd need to weight that by population, and it would surprise me if 17 of the 25 least-populous states weren't Red States.
1
I was brought up in an education system, culture and media which were saturated with feminism. So I actually became a feminist sympathizer myself. Only in my late 20s did I begin to understand how feminism ruins everything it touches. It's a demolition machine by design. It's the Great Gaslighting.

They aren't a community. They're a category. Several categories, if you like, but a category isn't a community.

Cool. 👍 Just don't be anyone's disciple.
