In the late 1970s the anti-Shah agitators complained of oppression. And since they ousted him it's been 45 years of 10x greater oppression. It's been that way with revolutions in the vast majority of instances.

@theodoreconstantini2548 Fair take. Yet liberalization (e.g. of civil rights) would've been perilously risky too. In a sticky situation, freedom for everyone can above all else mean, unfortunately, freedom for radicals to organize a violent overthrow of the government. Where there's a proliferation of radicals such as communists and would-be theocrats, it can be impossible to "have nice things" such as civil liberties. Damned if you do, etc.

@redburban1394 If you really do mean "always against," that's a mistaken view. Talk to Iranians of at least middle age about the country before the dismal revolution. It's likewise mistaken to generalize the hypocrisy of the theocracy and its strong supporters to the population as a whole. As I understand it, most people would love to see Iran rid of the minority which oppresses it. If they only could, they'd turn their country towards the West.

@lisabaltzer4190 'Execrable' and 'excrement' are not cognate. The first is rooted in Latin meaning 'curse,' the second in Latin meaning 'waste.' Similar-looking, that's all.

@redburban1394 I don't get it. First you say something I can't agree with, then you start basically telling me what I'm telling you. Oh well, it's all good. Can't complain too much about that.😄

@rolandjohansson2714 No, for some reason it doesn't bore me. I'm so fascinated with language that it even extends to first and last names. (Also place names.) From early boyhood I would read with considerable interest all the names in the credits at the end of TV shows and movies. To answer your other question, I live somewhere in the English-speaking world. Thanks for your interesting replies.

@PhilMoskowitz "The people"? Please, do not get carried away with easy sentimentalism. Those whom you call "the people" were a small cabal, what I've heard many times called a loathsome gang of brutal, backward and fan at ical hicks and thugs, who frogmarched the country back to medieval times. Try to imagine Oklahoma City bomber types (but worse!) taking over the US to the horror of every civilized and right-thinking American. Would the onset of their tyranny amount to "the people making their choice of what kind of country they wanted"? Because that's basically what happened. And the real "people," pitiable ordinary Iranians, are now suffering in Year 45 of the revolution which children in schools are taught was glorious and literally heaven-sent. They were actually far better off back when children were taught that the Shah and his father were great men and national heroes, though they were really self-serving autocrats. They were still more enlightened and fair-minded, and less beastly, than their replacements.

@rolandjohansson2714 Typical Dane of good sense, it appears. Thanks, that was well stated.

@rolandjohansson2714 Oh, is that indicated by -sson versus -ssen for Danes?

Tapper is all confused because that's not what grad students chanting at Harvard say.

Thanks. Really well stated.
