  4. ​ @intpleb4206  That sounds unpleasant and I'm sorry you have to live with that. But that's you. You must not assume that others are the same as you. They might be nearly the same, they might be rather different or they might be nearly the opposite. If highly upsetting experiences always led to PTSD, then every person would have PTSD, because everyone has had highly upsetting experiences. Since not every person does have PTSD, we can conclude that the effect of such experiences on people can be passing. Empathy is not an ability to read minds or diagnose them, nor to know people well without knowing them. A person may think that they have a special ability to feel what others are feeling — and be wrong. (Like some people who think they are smart or funny or talented, but are wrong.) They may just be projecting their own feelings and personality characteristics onto others. Nor is everyone who goes around claiming to be empathetic necessarily sincere in the claim. I notice that some domineering and socially very unappetizing people never tire of saying how important empathy is, how much empathy they have, and how little certain others have — and lo and behold it's always others with whom they disagree or have poor relations. For them the claim of empathy is a cudgel at the service of their aggressive impulses. I automatically avoid them even at some cost.
