Being intelligent means being able to (1) tell far higher-quality lies, (2) cover them up much better, (3) talk your way out of trouble if you do get caught, (4) justify them to yourself in ingenious ways throughout your life, thereby making your conscience into a pipsqueak.

  5. 'Horseshoe theory' isn't a hypothesis as far as I'm concerned. It's the wisdom of the ages. Much older version: extremes meet. It applies here because political tastes and styles come out of character more than, say, intellect. Pinfold's dictum: Politics is a suit of clothes worn not by a person but a personality.
