I think it's due to so many cultures around the world having different calendars. So to standardise dates around the globe you have BCE and CE. This is based on the christian calendar where we are now in 2018. However all it does is remove any reference to christianity. Thus making it more inclusive. Simple really.

Jeff Johnson While there is evidence of flooding in different parts of the globe. The idea of 1 vessel saving all animals is ridiculous and has been clearly proved false.

Evidence?

@stephencurtis9400 To some but not all. I work with Nepalis. They are in 2075 according to their calender. I agree the starting point of CE is roughly the same as birth of Jesus however with Christians being a minority on earth it is arrogant to assume everyone wants a calender based on the birth and named after one historical figure.

@gabrielM1111 Please provide some evidence to support your "fact". Christians are the world's largest religion with roughly 2.2 billion. Total world population is 6 billion+ so just over 1/3 are Christians. So not a fact.

@gabrielM1111 You original comment said "majority". You do know what this means right? That woumd be over 50%. I never said they were not the largest religion on the planet but they are not the MAJORITY. You have disproved your own point and highlighted how stupid you are in the same message. Special.

@hopelives5197 Thank you for your well thought out reply. I have never argued christianity is not the largest religion. But a previous comment stated it was the majority. He then proceeded to prove himself wrong. However I need to correct a few points. I live and work in SE Asia and not all Asian cultures see Jesus in the same way. In Hinduism he is known as Saint Ishu and you are correct that he is viewed as a very holy person. He is not known in Taoism or Shinto. Although Christianity is accepted in countries alongside those faiths. In China lots of christian groups are regulated by the state and sadly do not have the same freedom to worship as in democracies. However none of this changes the issue that to respect other and all religions you have to acknowledge the differences. The switch to CE can be seen as Common Era or Christian Era. It is an acknowledgement of the impact of Jesus' life on western cultures who set the current calendar. This is now standard across the globe but needs to take into account other cultures, not just assume superiority (I am not saying you do, but clearly others do).

@mikewhite9818 Over educated? The excuse used by extremists on all political sides, right and left to persecute intellectuals for thinking differently to them.

@mikewhite9818 We are talking about changing 2 letters: BC to BCE and AD to 2 other letters CE. Is that confusing? This is to be inclusive of all cultures and religions. If it helps you to remember the CE can be either Common Era or Christian Era. The years have not changed only 2 letters. But good for you to try and change the story to focus on your political beliefs.

@mikewhite9818 Again you mention democrats in your comment, when they have nothing to do with the subject - obsessed perhaps? There have been 359,000 views and yet you claim to know half were confused. What you mean is you were confused and have decided to complain on behalf of almost 180,000 other people. AD stands for Anno Domini and is medieval Latin. You think Christians across the world in Africa and Asia understand this? The world is changing to recognise difference and become more accepting of people of varying religions and beliefs. You may not like this but if you are struggling with a change from BC to BCE I wish you good luck.
