  1. My upbringing was in a sweat lodge. Learnt from a woman who lived in a round house that had no electricity or gas, or plumbing. Humble. She was a pipe holder. Very sacred elder. She used to call me Musom. It means grandfather. I always thought that was strange. I was in a night lodge ceremony with lots of people one night. A ceremony where we communicate with the spirits in the spirit world. We sing and we offer tobacco and flags. We offer tobacco to the elder to ask questions and insight to the spirits for us. The spirits answer you. Not in your head. Everyone hears the answer to your questions. Anyway they told my mom that my name was windwalker and I had to go to natural running water source and wash every morning before the sun rises every day for 4 days. The river was frozen but I broke the ice and bathed for the four days. I didn’t know why. Then in another ceremony a Buffalo hide was thrown in my lap from the spirit world. They told me to pray with it. Then a giant eagle started flapping its wings in my face. The air was really blowing. It was so awesome. I was a sceptic before that. Even as a child. Because I went to public school and I was the only native in my class. So I experienced racism every day. I was teased about my culture. After that I knew the truth. It scared me. It scared me to know they were real. They could physically touch and even harm me. I knew how sacred and serious they were. I stayed away for a long time. I came back and now I am ready to be me.
