Victoria Wade if you enjoy deep philosophical suffering you would probably idolize Russian literature and other cultural things LOL.

Configured Devolper it depends on what you may consider a racism. People are less "sensitive" that's for sure. If you arguing with people they are less let's say politically correct LOL. But if you are a tourist it's highly unlikely something bad is going to happen to you because of your race these days. Racial profiling among cops is a common thing(they usually target people from Central Asia for immigration/documents check. If you look at newspaper real estate rent section you may see a lot of "slavs only" allowed remarks. That's pretty much all the racism you can face in Russia these days.

Justin well freedom has a lot of different dimensions, in most of those dimensions Russia sucks but some like tax freedom were rated pretty high, basically some laws are not strictly enforced so in some cases people feel free because they can get away with some situations so they believe they face less restrictions compare to the West just because nobody cares and the rule of law is not always that strict.

Justin I don't have any premise for you to believe in, overall business climate sucks in Russia, but you can still get away with a lot of things you can't in the West due to lack of regulation/loose enforcement and you don't always have to be an oligarch. It got substantially worse though last 3-4 years for regular Ivans when it comes to tax freedom. When it was a lot of money inflows from Russia's commodity exports the government turned a blind eye on how some small fish are making their money. Now they are trying to make small fish like freelancers to pay their taxes too.

Stephen Gresser you can say whatever you want stop saying that he's in danger or some other nonsense, who cares about some blogger who speaks english in his videos, I doubt he's damaging the reputation of the "regime" outside the country because every serious decision maker doesn't have any illusion about Russia and that foreign general public just listens their own mass media that are way more harsh on Russia than Roman.

GumgumDookuin Russian justice and prison systems are the most ugly and rotten institutions in the country

Danny Roth I have some friends who faced police arrests and further prosecution in the US, I tend to believe most of American police brutality are provoked , in Russia police is kinda soft in some situations American police would shoot you on spot but the American police rarely uses physical torture to the suspect to get his guilt clause in written form or some evidence, which is common in Russia. Though I believe a speedy trial amendment is widely violated in America you can still get a fair trial while in Russia no chance unless you find a way to bribe the judge. It's just like 0.4% of all suspects will be released from a court room as "not guilty". I believe is Stalins time is was like 9% or something LOL.

Crubino man , conservatism in Russia would disappoint 99% of American conservatives because it's not only about those cultural values. American conservatives strife for economic freedom and small government, Russian conservatives(both communism lovers and Russian Empire lovers) are the opposite. I believe economy and governance are more important than cultural things.
1
Crubino it's a matter of perspective, if you hear every day that you should tolerate bad governance and bad treatment of independent economic agents just because "at least we preserve our conservative cultural values so shut up" that's f up man. I'm perfectly OK with American conservatives but their view of Russian conservatives as themselves just speaking Russian language is very far from the true. Russia is not a conservative paradise they think it is. I would love Russian conservatives were the same as American conservatives. They are not!

Crubino bailing out rich CEOs or using government mechanisms as a tool to get unfair competitive advantage are definitely not "conservative values" in America and I totally agree. I support everything that makes people more independent from the government (and big corporations)that's my main "values" (conservative by American standards)unfortunately mr. Putin did nothing to improve that situation, on the opposite he does everything to restrict small players and keep people dependent on big players(aka oligarchs)and the government to keep them under control. Most American conservatives would hate him if they knew what's going on besides that "cultural conservatism bs" from Putin.
