That's stupid, you chances to be mistreated by the authorities as western foreigner is much much lower than if you were a russian. I would have preferred to live in Russia as a western foreigner honestly, 100%, as an American you are not 100% untouchable if you commit some crime but you won't have to worry about getting tortured by the police as a crime suspect or tortured in prison though living conditions in Russian prisons are considered torture by itself by the EU even without physical torture. I know there was a jail section in Moscow for western foreigners(SIZO #4) where they had living conditions comparable with EU standards.

I don't get how your drug charges in the U.K. are related to your ability to visit and live in Russia. If you have a passport you can apply for a visa, as far as I know even if you apply for a residence permit they don't ask you for a criminal record confirmation from your home country and there is no way Britain would share the criminal records of it's citizens with Russia, they even refused to share tax information on Russian citizens who reside in Britain.

cucumber when I applied for a long term residential visa in the Czech Republic they asked for a "certificate" from Russia that my criminal history is clear(it was) but they have no technical capability to verify the certificate...you know what I mean)))). BTW ,there are companies in Russia that can help you with long term business visa if a regular tourist visa is not enough for you.

Please search for a tourism numbers, Russia is pretty popular among tourists. St. Petersburg is one of the most popular tourist cities in the world.

Yeah, that's corrects. But I would put the natural process of economic decentralization first. Only those people who could sustain themselves without government help will eventually require freedom/better governance/institutions(you don't have live abroad for that) . Poor people dependent on the government only want government parenting , strong hand etc. Russian economy is 70% government related and it's getting even worse as many believe government sees independent economic agents as a treat.

There are lot of Asians in Moscow and many people are accustomed to them, they were probably extremely unlucky, police could profile them for a documents checks though if you look like a central Asian illegal migrant worker. If you are looking like a Japanese tourist it's unlikely.

No, I would prefer to live in Russia as an American actually. Even if you commit a crime no one gonna harass you the way they harass Russian or other non-western citizens both the police and penitentiary. They don't want any extra attention.Russia has always treated western foreigners better than their own citizens.
