  2. Lovely home and I like the variety of woods that were used. I was most interested, however, to learn about his efforts to preserve the Oregon Trail. How appropriate that he passed away on the trail that had charted the course of his entire adult life.

  10. I had the privilege to visit here several years ago and it is definitely well worth the visit. One of my favorite parts of the tour was the recently built pavilion, in the same Beaux Arts style as the house, to showcase Flagler's private railcar.

  19. Very interesting, I wonder why he didn't just build a house instead? The first part of the house with all the marble felt very cold, but the inner rooms were very nice. Glad to see it survived, at least partially, in its newest reincarnation as a hotel. Great video!

  20. Thanks for a great video, an important story that needs to be told. That is the beauty of historic sites, so many rich layers of history to be revealed. I'd love to see another video on the house as I understand it was a huge undertaking with lots of decisions to be made when the house was restored from its DuPont era appearance to the original Madison house.

  22. Being a Chicagoan, it was very interesting to find out the story behind the "Bedford" in Bedford Park, Illinois. I liked both houses but was especially drawn to the wonderful "garage" on the country estate.

  26. Quite an interesting story I had not heard before. I can't figure out if he was a spy or just a bit inept. The home parole, and later pardon from his West Point friend, Ulysses S. Grant, do seem to suggest he received some preferential treatment for some reason, and perhaps he did help out the Union but it was never disclosed, or else I am sure he would never have been welcomed back to his home - which is a lovely period home!

  27. Quite the rags to riches story! Love the library and the ceiling in the Moorish smoking room. Kudos to Portland for saving the house after the storm, unlike so many other houses around the country in the 1960s that were simply bulldozed. Thanks for another great video.

  34. Great overview of the community. I had certainly heard of it, but had not seen images of many of the houses. The reference to Wright was spot on, as the shingle style house you showed just before that reminded me a great deal of Wright's own home in Oak Park. Thanks for another great video.

  38. Thanks for a great review of the two cities. Sad to see so much lost, but I still enjoy a stroll along St. Paul's Summit Avenue where a number of houses has survived. One of my favorites is the Lightner House at 318 Summit, designed by Cass Gilbert in the Richardsonian Romanesque style.

  39. Another great video and I like that it covered two different houses. I was so surprised at the end to find they were both still standing. I didn't care for the first one, all the stone on the interior would have made it feel cold. The second house was nicer, especially that amazing staircase.

  41. Thanks for sharing, I knew nothing about the "Poor" of Standard and Poor's. It is intriguing, and rather sad, to see how often these wealthy men invest huge amounts in these lavish homes and then have little time to enjoy them due to death or reversal of fortunes. Thank goodness all of the wonderful craftsmanship was documented with these great photos. Thanks, as always, for a fascinating series!!

  43. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here several years ago, and you would never know it was a recreation if they didn't tell you. Of course it is historic now, as the recreation itself is 100 years old! I like the "gloomy respectability" of the library the best. Thanks for another great video!

Beautiful home, I was intrigued by the elaborate wall treatment over the fireplace in the drawing room (and the peacock standing on the handrail in the stair landing).   45. Thanks for a great video overview of the wonderful homes at Geneva Lake. I highly recommend a visit to the 1888 Black Point, the only one of the houses open to the public as a house museum. I was also glad to see you briefly included the Mitchell mansion, which started its life as the Ceylon building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition before being dismantled and rebuilt at the lake. Although that house is long gone, significant pieces of it were salvaged and can be seen at the Geneva Lake Museum.
