Could or did conquer with ease? The US could invade Canada and occupy all the major population centres in the south, no problem. They could probably do this within three days. But what you are not taking into consideration is that contrary to what you may have been led to believe, there is a die hard dedicated gun culture in rural Canada. We have for all intents and purposes an almost infinite boreal forest to hide in. We are the best marksmen in the world and our national politeness comes to a collective end during times of war. Our light infantry was coined as the Stromtroopers by German military during WWI, the Shock Troops of the Empire, and is what inspired the SA to call their Brownshirts as such. The largest privately owned airforce on the planet has their main base of operations north of Montreal. Our military airmen have taken Top Gun more times than any other nation. You would be looking at a never ending guerrilla war of attrition fought by a people who were court-martialed for scalping up until the end of WWII. In 1812 while our motherland was involved in a war with Napoleon you tried to invade with the strength of the entire Continental Army. You were held at bay for years by a rag-tag militia made up of farmers, bushmen and braves. English French, Scots and First Nations; a foreign invader trespassing is the only thing in the world guaranteed to unite us. An annexation along political lines would be a much more sensical way to join US and Canadian territories. Southern Ontario, Quebec, the Maritime provinces, Nunavut, metropolitan Vancouver and the Island to be ceded to a leftist state comprised of them, NY, New England, Michigan, Wisconsin, Northern California, Oregon, Washington and Chicagoland. On the other end, Northern Ontario from Sudbury going north and west, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC, the Yukon and Northwest Territories join with the red states in a conservative republic.
