@chicagorealhistorytours I love hearing the words "Kafkaesque" and "Orwellian" being spewed from the mouths of sheeple who have obviously read neither Kafka, nor Orwell. The educational systems of the west are robbing our children of appreciation of true art, when names like Vonnegut and Kesey, who during my time in high school had more than one book on the required reading list, are completely unfamiliar to people graduating from universities with communications, journalism, and English literature degrees. There are far too many academics in my family, including my sister, her husband, and several aunts and uncles who have PHDs, teaching certificates, a couple of them even have tenure at places like McMaster and UT and Western. I'm better read than all of them put together. But they look down on me because I chose to pursue a career in the trade that made all their opportunities possible and became a brick and stone mason. I'm also the only one in the black and the first person each and every one of them comes to when they want to borrow money. Well, I used to be, not anymore. I guess the sting of being taunted and laughed at by the scholarly cave-man was just too big a price to pay.

@chicagorealhistorytours I'm a brick and stone mason specializing in the restoration of heritage construction. I've worked on castles, and monasteries and churches all over the place, 14 different countries in all. Both of my grandfathers were masons and business partners, one from Aberdeen the other from London. I learned from them. Spending years on the job with the two of them was like being dropped head-first into a dunk-tank exploding with the love/hate relationship that is the English/Scottish bromance. There aren't a lot of real, old world masons around anymore, especially outside Europe. I've rarely gone hungry. I'm also quite familiar with Russian history. I'm an Orthodox Hospitaller and I have a Православие или Cмерть flag hanging on the wall here beside me. I burn my prayer candles in an old, bronze, double headed eagle candle holder that nobody seems to be able to give me provenance on, but are always more than willing to offer me a super awesome deal to take off my hands.

Books are my number one commodity, that take up the most space, and weigh by far more than anything else I own. I know this for a fact because I've had to move them all more than once, and the boxes just keep getting heavier.

@chrislastnam6822 To be fair, the fires of Dresden were indeed caused by the bombings and spread like mad because the entire "old town" part of the city was made almost entirely of wood that had been curing like firewood for literally hundreds of years. However Dresden was not specifically targeted with incendiaries. Dresden was, contrary to what some historians and propagandists would have people believe, an industrial and manufacturing hub, with 500+ year old houses made of kindling within a literal stone's throw of coal fired steel mills. It's a miracle the whole place didn't go up in flames long before WWII. Plenty of historic English neighbourhoods were destroyed in exactly the same manner, but we don't hear anything about that. The French surrendered early on tho prevent the destruction of iconic historical monuments and buildings, which the Wehrmacht was purposefully targeting to incur the intended, and ultimately achieved result of total French capitulation. Never mind the countless historical and cultural wonders all over Europe that were wiped from the face of the Earth in that cabaret of needless destruction, brought on the Little Bohemian Corporal and his minions. Monte Casino, the monastery founded by Saint Benedict of Nursia and the birthplace of western asceticism was completely flattened by American artillery. Germany does not deserve the world's sympathy over Dresden. War is hell.

@chicagorealhistorytours I thought about taking a long flight back to the old home, but Harare just doesn't hold the same appeal for me as Salisbury did, for some odd reason.

@percybyssheshelley8573 Very clever, sir! At first I was thinking, "WTF is this guy on about?" and then the little lightbulb over top of my head flicked on. Then I flipped over a lid full of cabbage with my elbow, as I leaned forward to respond.
