  1. Often criminals will rummage through trash bins, find a receipt, enter the store and then grab the item off the shelf and attempt to “return” it. But this becomes difficult to pull off if the true customer paid with a card because merchants will only issue refunds to the same card originally used to make the purchase.

  2. As long as you have the original receipt (and it doesn’t look like it was crumpled up and thrown in the trash) and you’re willing to accept refund to the card that was used to make the purchase (instead of demanding cash) then no, nobody at the store will suspect you of anything.
