It takes 2 hours to reach the Titanic wreckage (per CNN and The Washington Post ) and communication was lost 1 hour and 45 minutes after they began their descent, which is about right on schedule. Maybe they descended just a bit too quickly (eg- the ballast was too heavy) and either became entangled in the wreckage or landed on the muddy seafloor. The weather was bad at the time they launched so they may not have been thorough enough in their pre-launch checklists and such. It was reported in Rolling Stone today that banging sounds were heard at roughly 30-minute intervals by a Canadian aircraft in the approximate area where the submersible went down. This story just keeps becoming more and more taut and tense, especially given that seconds are ticking away which could mean the difference between life and death for the five men.

With no GPS or sonar radar, they have to rely on constant guidance and step-by-step commands from the mother ship (eg- ”Go straight ahead about 50 meters, okay now take a left, you’re right there” ). Bear in mind it’s pitch-black down there and although the Titan has both interior and exterior lights they have to be shut off frequently to conserve electrical power. Also the vessel’s crush depth is just a hair over 13,000 feet and the Titanic wreckage lies at 12,500, which is flirting dangerously close to the limits of the vessel’s structural integrity (for example they could land on the ocean floor miles from the actual wreckage site and wind up in some underwater canyon at an even greater depth and there goes the whole ballgame) This whole expedition was such a crazy and stupid idea from the very beginning.

  14.  @janewright315  how can you tell if that's a cop or a security guard? Also I have no way of telling if the video was taken during or after the assault. The other images are blurred out so I can't tell what was preventing the other people from coming to the woman's aid. All the video shows is people screaming and a blurred out image of a fire. NOTE: I'm not questioning the guy's guilt (numerous witnesses) but why is everyone in this comments section more angry about what bystanders did or didn't do, than about the illegal piece of garbage who committed this horrible atrocity?

  15. Look, I’m as pro-Trump as anybody, but staying is probably smarter than self-deporting. There’s already an army of immigration lawyers lined up to defend every illegal in the country, and Univision Noticias has been interviewing some of them who are giving free legal advice on how to avoid deportation if they are detained. Look, don’t be naive about this. Once you’re on US soil, you are automatically entitled to all rights under the Constitution whether you’re here legally or not. There is no sugarcoating this - Trump and Homan have tough jobs ahead of them.

This suggests they descended into the depths too fast and crash landed, either becoming entangled in the Titanic wreckage or stuck in the mud on the ocean floor. I believe they’re still alive. We’ll never get them out though, there’s just not enough time.

  21.  @itsmissmimi4044  supposedly the US Navy has the maritime equivalent of tow cables but they’re kidding themselves. My gut is telling me that they descended too fast into the depths and crash landed into the ocean floor, becoming stuck in the muddy bottom. The only idea I can think of (which is a long shot, and of course only if they locate it) would be sending a remote powered vehicle down there to give it a good hard PUSH to free it and let it float by itself to the surface. Even if it risks damaging itself or the Titan in the process, at this point they have to roll the dice and go for broke.

  27.  @canisXsapien  I sure hope you're right...loss of electrical power would explain the lack of communication, and as long as they didn't get entangled or entrapped in the wreckage they would be able to float back to the surface simply by "dumping" their ballast, which is done by having the five men all lean up against one side of the compartment to tilt it, and then the ballast simply rolls off
