I worked at a gas station in Minnesota and they allowed customers the option to pump first and it after. Such an idiotic thing to let customers do that. Then they started forcing us to visually identify a vehicle and write down the tag number, which required us to use binoculars. This doubled our work load and just made us look ridiculous in front of other customers. Whenever my manager wasn’t around, I used to force the customers come in to pay first. Some customers complained bitterly (some literally screamed at me) but I was not sympathetic.

@dls951 no I quit that job in 2018 after working there exactly a year. I hated that job and I only took it because it was a 5-minute walk from where I was then living. In my opinion, all gas pumps should either be pay at the pump or pre-pay.

@dls951 thing is, management at my gas station refused to do away with the option of letting customers pump first and pay after. Which, naturally, led to a spate of gas pilferage and drive-offs which management then implicitly blamed us for and began requiring us to visually identify and write down license plate numbers. Ridiculous.

@dls951 yes I know, I was actually responding not to the OP but to two of the other commenters (NG and Perc) who mentioned that they live in the South and have never seen a gas station that allowed you to pump first and pay afterwards. I was simply pointing out that gas stations like that exist in parts of the Upper Midwest (and I personally think it's a horrible idea). Sorry if I didn't make that clear.
