  1. Southwest airlines is hardly cheap, In fact they’re much more expensive to fly on then Delta, JetBlue, United or American. Regardless, this whole mess is unacceptable, and it shows how much we need a high-speed rail network in this country, because airlines have a monopoly on domestic travel and they are screwing us.

  2.  @aceofknaves  you're the one who needs to do research. Southwest may have been a "low-cost" carrier way back in the day, but this is no longer the case. Southwest does not participate in outside search engines like Ex-pedia, so you have to check their website to compare them with the other majors. They also do not have codeshare agreements and they lack a central hub, which is a big part of the reason for the mess they created. They do offer free baggage, but this is simply factored into their higher fares. Nowadays, you have Spirit and Frontier which are considered "budget airlines". Southwest is not in this category. I live in Chicago and in the past four years I've flown four different airlines to Boston (INCLUDING Southwest) and all of those airlines (United, Delta, JetBlue) had significantly lower airfares than Southwest did when I flew them.
