  1. +Screaming Scallop skunks' poor eyesight -- and the fact they are nocturnal -- are big reasons why they are often hit by cars. Where do you live? I'm in the Midwest and skunks are hard to find here, but they are very common in the northeast where I grew up.

  3. +Michael Coulter you can try moth balls or just buying a few bottles of ammonia and dousing the ground beneath your deck. I don't know if it will work but it's worth a shot. Aside from the threat of being sprayed, wild skunks carry rabies so if you have any pets they are at risk.

  4. +Dammit Boy as a child that was always my biggest fear too, accidentally walking near (or stepping on) a skunk. Having said that, I still find it hard to believe that a person could get sprayed. First of all skunks can only spray up to 10-15 feet (at the very most) and most people can easily run twice that distance just in the time that it takes for a skunk to do a 180 and lift up its tail. Also, their natural instinct is to flee rather than spray (because they can only spray once in a 24-hour period). For that reason, some skunks which you encounter won't even be able to spray at all.
