I live in Chicago, and large retailers like Aldi and Whole Foods Market have opened stores in high-crime neighborhoods (like Englewood) only to later close those stores after a couple of years (we know why). If shrinkage affects a large retailer like Whole Foods (which is owned by Amazon) then you know what it does to an immigrant from India or Honduras surviving off a secured loan.

They were especially douchey with airport workers like me because, as an airport employee, they had the authority to confiscate my badge (which would effectively put me out of a job). But many of them have had to tone it down a bit because Congress (which oversees the TSA) has fielded a lot of complaints from the general public about TSA's customer service.

I've been to NYC and there's litter EVERYWHERE. Rats are attracted to one thing and that is the smell of food. They can't survive and they can't breed without food, in fact studies have shown that if rats can't find any other food source they will actually cannibalize themselves (essentially doing the work for us). The bottom line is that if you don't help keep the city and your own home clean, then you could set 10 billion rat traps and spray rat poison over every square inch of the city every day of every week....it won't make any real difference in the rat problem.

I also save money by living in the city and using public transportation. There IS affordable housing in America, you just have look for it and to be prepared to relocate if necessary, whether it’s somewhere like Fargo, Kansas City or Cincinnati. I’m tired of hearing these tales of woe from people who live in Manhattan or San Francisco. MOVE for goodness sake.

  189. I live in Chicago and I’d estimate about 25-35 percent of the riders don’t pay their fare. Ironically the problem seems slightly worse on the buses. You’d think it would be worse on the trains since people boarding buses have to pass right by a CTA employee.
