I would go to a shelter. ”No Sean! Homeless shelters are always full!” No they’re not. But they have RULES (eg- no smoking, no alcohol, no drugs, curfews) which these street people are unwilling to abide by, hence they sleep on the streets or in airports. ”No Sean! Shelters are dangerous! Show some compassion!” …shelters have a lot more security than trains or train stations.

@BLOCKBOI3RD exactly. There’s no reason why there should be so many street people in places like Manhattan or San Francisco. If a place is too expensive to live in, you move to a different place where it’s cheaper. Simple as that.

@Jstack01 every time I hear someone talking about how dirty and unsafe the shelters are (and I'm not accusing you specifically) I want to ask them "you think it's any safer or more comfortable sleeping on a moving subway train or in a tent underneath a highway overpass?"

$100K a year? Stop being so dramatic Marjorie. I made $33K last year and still managed to pay my rent here in Chicago and I have student loans to pay on top of that.

I’ve VOLUNTEERED at a shelter here in Chicago and there were plenty of nights when we were not at full capacity. But there were plenty of people whom we had to kick out for a variety of reasons, such as: using heroin or meth, smoking, brandishing a knife, sexually harassing other residents, indecency or sexual misconduct. Yeah, shelters actually have these things called “rules” and some individuals are not willing to abide by them.

@amber619pop this is baloney. I make only $30K a year and I’m able to afford a decent studio in a nice neighborhood. And I live alone. I also save money by living in the city and using public transportation. There IS affordable housing in America, you just have look for it and to be prepared to relocate if necessary, whether it’s somewhere like Fargo, Kansas City or Cincinnati. I’m tired of hearing these tales of woe from people who live in Manhattan or San Francisco. MOVE for goodness sake.

@johnnymcblaze oh and when I lived in North Dakota (five years) I could afford my rent there too. You’ve probably never even BEEN to Chicago but you automatically make the assumption that live in a ghetto with broken windows and raining bullets. You sound like another one of these people full of a million excuses why you can’t pay your rent and feeling entitled to have the government pay it all for you.
