It’s passive-aggressive behavior. The passengers know damn well these items are are restricted or prohibited, they’re just looking for a reason to argue and fight with the TSA.

@KD_SWAGGER I can kinda see both sides of the coin. I spent two years working in an airport and TSA has a well-earned reputation for being a**holes. They were especially douchey with airport workers like me because, as an airport employee, they had the authority to confiscate my badge (which would effectively put me out of a job). But many of them have had to tone it down a bit because Congress (which oversees the TSA) has fielded a lot of complaints from the general public about TSA's customer service.
