  2. Florida is discovering how hard it is to fund its own state when it can't rely on tourists or the federal government to do it for them.

Because Florida has no personal income or inheritance taxes, and depends on its (6%) sales tax for most of its funding. 70 percent of Florida's revenue comes from the sales tax (a higher percentage than any other state). Most of that sales tax is paid by tourists, and they won't be coming back anytime soon! It's time for you people to look for ways to diversify your economy so you're not so beholden to Disney World visitors to prop up your train wreck of a low-wage retail and hospitality economy.

  5. Support your Troops & Atheletes exactly. The people who are unemployed in Florida are unemployed against their will and through no fault of their own. They want to go back to work but not before it’s safe to do so.

  7.  @celesteschaub3021  Florida's lawmakers have had every opportunity to diversify the economy and each and every time they have stonewalled. I think back to Dick Scott (I know he goes by Rick, but he looks more like a Dick to me) de-railing the proposed high-speed rail project (no pun intended) to be paid for with President Obama's economic stimulus package. And he did so simply because he didn't like Obama. That would have created hundreds if not thousands of full-time jobs for Florida. And Dick said no.

  8. Babs Shapiro Florida does not have enough money to pay all of their unemployment claims and DeSantis knows it. Sending people back to work is the only way Republicans can take the heat off themselves during an election year.

  12. Alisha Ohara I’ve lived in Florida. I was self-employed for most of the time I was there because finding a suitable FT job was impossible. Which is why I moved out. According to the BLS, in Central Florida more than 20 percent of all non-agriculture jobs are in the (low-wage) retail and services sector - that doesn’t sound like a very diversified economy to ME! If what you wrote here is so true, how come Florida (Miami in particular) has some of the highest income inequality in the entire country? As a sign of how pathetic the wages are, Floridians have the seventh-highest credit card debt in the country. And as to your assertion that Florida’s economy doesn’t rely solely on tourism, LOL! Just wait a while. Even after you guys sort out this mess with your wonderful unemployment system, your problems are just beginning. Tourism is going to take a LONG time to recover. You guys are screwed!

Meanwhile there is a shortfall of $10 million in the state's unemployment fund, and you have the audacity to write all of the junk that you've written here and try to tell me that your state is some type of bastion of prosperity. You are something else, you know that?

  16.  @celesteschaub3021  I apologize, I didn't realize you were that old. At your age I would imagine that the issues that are important to people like Tammy and I (e.g. a healthy job market, education, etc.,) aren't as important to you (I assume you're retired?). But I'm 42, so jobs and the economy matter to me a lot. In any event you're too old to let be letting all of this affect you.
