I've earned at or close to minimum wage for just about all my life (despite the fact I have a college degree) ...but I've never been homeless, because I live within my means. Here is my advice: * Rent instead of own ...you never have to worry about shoveling/sweeping sidewalks or landscaping, you can relocate much more easily if you need to, and if something ever breaks, leaks or doesn't work...it's someone else's responsibility to fix it. Plus, rents tend to be cheaper than mortgages. * Live in a smaller space. Not only do smaller apartments/condos/houses translate into cheaper rent, but it is also cheaper and easier to heat or cool them. * Consider living in a city where you don't need to own a car (which will save you more). Your employer will likely offer some type of commuter benefit program where you can use pre-tax dollars to pay for train and bus fare. * Use birth control and don't have kids you can't afford to raise, and expect someone else to foot the bill. * Always pay your rent on time, keep your unit clean and be respectful of your neighbors. If you do this, your landlord will be much more open and willing to negotiate the rent to keep you as a tenant.
