@hoosierbaddy3052 I’m referring to Social Security taxes. When you’re an independent contractor, the government makes you pay both the employee and employer portions, except that the employer portion is much larger. Many people simply don’t realize or understand the complexities of owning their own business or working as an independent contractor as with the ride-sharing companies.

My apartment in Chicago approved me for a one-year lease despite the fact that I moved here without a job lined up. They just wanted a co-signer even though I have excellent credit (and my co-signer's credit was only average). So no, not all landlords will demand 3x income or even any income at all.

@simplyneat22 I realize that, I didn't miss anything - that's my whole point! The bottom line is that if someone is working full-time and still having trouble paying their rent, then they need to find a different place to live. That means a different city and a different state. The reason why Florida has become so unaffordable is because too many people want to live there. You've got people pouring into the state from points north (who want a place to live with warm winters) and people from points south who are immigrants. It's also the reason why wages there are so low. The labor market is saturated - employers realize this and that's why they are able to get away with paying crappy wages. Also there isn't any real economy other than tourism, which is mostly low-paying service jobs. And landlords are able to get away with charging high rents because many households and apartments have large families living together under one roof sharing the rent.
