I read John Walsh's book. The security guard falsely assumed Adam was in the company of the white Argentine boys who were arguing and fighting with the black boys. Adam was (as his father describes him) a "little gentleman" who was very deferential to adults, so when the security guard scolded the boys and kicked them out, Adam complied as he was too shy to speak up and explain himself. 1:54 Adam's mother wasn't browsing, she had seen a lamp in the Sears catalog and all she did was stop in at the store to ask an employee if it was in stock. Unbelievable that she was away from her son for no more than three minutes and he was gone. I'm almost the same age as Adam and I remember this story very well, as well as the 1983 TV movie. At least partially as a result of this tragedy, throughout my childhood I was paranoid about interacting with strangers. The security guard met with John Walsh years later, and told him that her guilt over this incident led her to become a nurse.

@m.e.d.7997 Adam's mother was away from him for approximately 15 minutes but she was able to see the top of his head out of the corner of her eye the entire time, except for a three to five minute period during which she had her head down as she was conducting her transaction in the furniture department.
