I work as a cashier and I hear that sometimes from customers. It’s baloney. Self-checkout terminals are NOT going to eliminate jobs. You still need a human to clean and maintain the machine, remove and count cash, replace paper receipt rolls, refurbish the supply of plastic baga, assist with troubleshooting, verify IDs of customers purchasing age-restricted products, and monitor to make sure customers are properly scanning all products, among other duties. Not to mention the new job(s) created for the manufacturer of the machine and the software engineer(s). Jobs cannot be “destroyed”. They simply change with technology.

@witzelasper2821 I could use another analogy. Back in the early 20th century when vending machines were first introduced to the market, people were saying "Oh no! All this automation! It's going to destroy jobs!" ...but it didn't, did it. You need a delivery driver to go to the warehouse and fill up the machine, remove and count the cash, and respond to customer complaints about incorrect change, expired products, etc., And back when email first became commonplace back in the mid-90s (you're obviously too young to remember) everybody said that was the beginning of the end of the postal service. And what happened? People began ordering stuff online, and now instead of handwritten letters or magazines, the postal service is busy delivering parcels and packages. 📦📦📦📦📦
