The Republicans had a conniption fit over that. That sound bite was played over and over again on Fox News and talk radio. The Republicans actually accused Obama of not taking Mitt Romney's famous "geopolitical foe" remark seriously, and for being too soft on Russia. And now all of a sudden Trump comes along, and the Republicans act like they're all cool with the Russians. Such hypocrites!
