Was that restaurant in Florida? That's a state known to do that type of shady business.

@makatron good idea Isaac. Businesses hate a negative Yelp review and they’ll change their act.

If you make $150K a year I don't see why money is an issue for you (...unless you live in California or Manhattan).

@kindmulberry7196 I wasn’t shaming the OP for not tipping. I was simply questioning him for saying he doesn’t have money to eat out when he earns $150K and has no debt.

@chrisarrington9098 servers of course will hope the customer doesn’t notice and they won’t warn the customer in advance

@LuckyBombay I think technically this practice is legal as long as the restaurant is upfront and warns the customers in writing, however different states have different laws about how restaurants must disclose this. You mentioned that NYC requires restaurants to clearly disclose this on the receipt (which I think is fair). But when I last checked, Florida allowed restaurants to include only very fine print on their menus, which many customers would fail to see, and would leave a tip on top of the price they paid. I've been to restaurants on South Beach for example, where the gratuities were included. I remember one one occasion when I handed my server exact change (knowing as I did that the tip was included) I remember she gave me a very funny look, lol.
