  1. The reason that Ukraine couldn't quickly attack heading east was because of the mud and the long distance they would have had to haul the tanks from the west, and the lack of air cover. As Alex pointed out at the time, sending tanks to Kiev pinned down the military resources to protect the capital that otherwise could have been sent to the East, while the Russians was busy staging their assets to protect the newly acquired Russian territory.

The national sport of Russia is chess, and the last thing a good chess player is going to do is make moves based on emotion. russia has lots of tools at its disposal short of nuclear war. For instance, they could withhold raw materials that are desperately needed in europe! Oh, that's already happened. Military men tend to think in terms of tanks, ships, airplanes and armies, but ultimately wars are won or loss based on economic factors as one side runs out of the materials necessary to keep the war going.
