Instead of somebody signing up for four years, you need them to make a lifetime commitment before you invest millions of dollars in training. And if they quit or are killed, it’s impossible to replace them quickly

  7. Long range artillery can fire nuclear capable tactical weapons. Does that mean we should expect NATO to preemptively start blowing up Russian artillery directly because in theory it could lob a nuclear weapon? The NATO article 5 principle that an attack on one is an attack on all – what if the NATO member is the country that initiates the attack and Russia responds in kind?
