I'm in Canada and values are different really. People there want those things. The problem I see is they are blinded by propaganda. It happen in Canada too to lesser degree. That's why they don't have universal healthcare. I remember a they said they don't want death panels deciding who should live or die yet they already have that through insurance companies in much worse way. You see this a lot. Governments allocated a bunch money into pot for X. Even when X doesn't need the money they take the money create nonsense research is the same reason you seen nonsense projects publicly funded. This in my opinion on it, people get budget, they don't use it so twit set up rule that you don't get budget again. So people waste the money as they might have project next that is of value. Problem is the project of value in the another area doesn't get funding. It's messed. Why can we put all public money in one big pool then submit valid proposals to get budget to do those things. What I see and I'm sure this applies to academia too is fiefdoms or silos where people protect their jobs by looking busy when they are not and creating a lot make work projects that do literally nothing.

st of my life. What I think is this is sort of true. Only AI is and end of traditional computers so it has lots of purpose. Quantum Computers, I've only read about them, they are the at the beginning with out much purpose yet. I suspect AI on current system will provide more purpose for Quantum that drive it in the future. This is what happens when any form of machine intelligence gets applied. I'm not talking AI but tool that help you code and building new things. AI is just that on steroids.

Just pattern recognition that's all. AI can do it so fast it appears self aware but it's still just pattern recognition. I doubt we'd notice AI becoming self aware as we don't even know if we are actually self aware or just a function of biology. I've seen a lot debates back and forth on that one. Interesting thought experiments but really no way to prove the one way or the other.

I think the economic factor won't be a problem. Like you said government are asleep and the economic change would happen over night and leave them scrambling when it does happen, which I agree won't be any time soon but I suspect when it does it will hit by surprise due to the crying wolf we see today and 3 years and not much has changed we won't believe it when it really happens in decades to come.

@nickv8334 I don't see how, green house gas emission for data centers exceed 18%, as well data centers contribute to climate change through heat pollution due to massive cooling requirements. The add the construction of data centers and emission from concrete production for example. AI definitely loses that round.

Musk is visionary. Visionaries rarely see the vision they put predict. 20 years is a joke, maybe 20 years to put some people on mars as expedition. Then if they is some valuable resource on mars they will exploit that for the profits. But will profits even be a thing with AI and automation in 100 years. I see colonization of the moon more acceptable and that for external resources. A moon base where we use robotic space craft to find asteroids that have value and bring them back to moon for processing and back to earth. That's a big IF too, only if our probes return something useful. That would be good say getting resource from asteroids if possible vs mining and destroying out local planetary environment. There is problem. Since I was kid 3 Billion population now 9 billion tripling in my life time. If that population is to grow we need off this planet. I double will achieve that before mother nature culls the human herds. Covid19, bird flu, climate change and fungal infection. I think that will happen before Musk's dream but then that could be why he's talking 20 years. Does make it possible though.

I don't understand how claim reality is myth is something people would buy. The climate has always changed. You can see it now by just going outside and being observant. I guess i could understand if you born in 2015 you might not notice that much. Too busy playing with toys and lacking decades ago reference points. I notice climate change in plants, animals and insects. In my yard I have birds that 30 years ago would have no business being here. Same insects. I have plants that when I was kid would never grow in our zone but grow now and produce fruit. Lot insects are big problem like tics. We've always had them but the cold killed them off so they were rare. Now they are common as the it does not get cold enough long enough. 2 week of polar vortex apparently isn't enough. Now climate always changes it just does so slowly normally. Every so often it does a rapid change but that also appears to happen with points in time mass extinction events. Any species that can adapt goes extinct, the hits both animal and plant life. I'm not convinced that Co2 is the reason for climate change, could be just symptom. I look at increase in global temperature and it seems to follow the time line of heat exchangers for refrigeration. The growth in AC for data center, large office towers, homes, cars, shipping goods export/imports. Train cars and truck with refrigeration units. All this power by fossil fuels that produce Co2 and Methane as green house gas. I picture a green house growing vegetable with an huge refrigerator in corner power buy diesel generator. A haze in tall ceiling but heat coming from coils of the the refrigerator are the real culprit. The green house gases don't help, just make it worse. So going to green energy could make this even worse. Imagine no longer using fossil fuel but using solar to power our AC electric vehicles. Put in heat pump to cool the home, dump that heat outside.

I don't see 1000 years away. I work in IT. I've seen the impact of it. How it's connected the world brought people together. I'm watching you now. We can put 8 billion brains on this, more than we can run millions of GPUs to create AI to assist or tell us how to do it from patterns were are not capable of recognizing.
