none of my kids go smart phone till they were in high school. By the we had old phones and with driving, jobs, school now the phone was needed. Mostly to get work, seem work place want the ability to phone kids to fill shifts and no cell phone less likely to get employment.

Seems to me horses were a social status symbol for girls, from my experience. If a girl had horse it didn't matter if she was socially awkward or not deemed pretty, she had a horse and could ride and care for it. That alone made her popular. At least that's how it was where I lived. Then you'd have all the other girls collecting plastic horses and getting knowledgeable in order to get in with popular girls that had horses. My daughter didn't care about horses at all. She all about cats.
