  2.  @toryberch  I’m approaching mid 60’s, always physical laborer, just now hitting me. Knees, feet, shoulder, hip… all at once. Best thing you can do is to keep moving, & drink plenty of water. Bob & Brad on YT have been lifesavers. They have simple daily exercises that will keep you mobile, even a couple that shows you how to get up off the floor.

My first thought, also, & only because I worked a rental place where we had some really old customers, & this old widow woman came in one day raising hell because she figured she had paid for her equipment 10x over. So, they sold her the ( now ) piece of junk on a payment plan to make her happy. She religiously made payments every Monday, & we all got to know her life story ( which had been pretty amazing ). A year later, while writing out her last payment, she got all teary eyed, & said, “Well, I guess this is it… last time I’ll be seeing all of y’all…”, so the boss invited her to attend our end-of-the month safety/lunch meetings &, of course, she was still welcome to drop by anytime. I think a lot of it has to do, nowadays, with so many being secluded for so long, that they don’t know how to make conversation or act sociable.

  5. I’m a little older & don’t like the cold, but we can adapt. One thing I’ve done every morning is make sure that I’m able to touch my toes, then slide on underwear & jeans while standing on one leg. Decades ago I read that balance is the most importance in staying young & fit. Also, strengthening & posture exercisers 10-15 minutes a day really does pay off.

  6. Word on camping toilets: a bucket with a tight fitting lid or an old insulated beverage dispenser with a screw on lid, works just as well. And I’d recommend Feline Pine kitty litter - doesn’t take much - just a scoop, inside a trashcan liner.

I’m a senior who will be living in a van by this time next year, but I’m not buying into the story that those who have even less than I, are the reason that so many seniors & veterans in the US are unable to afford housing. There’s always been an extravagant amount spent on military contracts. If they could funnel just 2% of that into affordable housing, we’d be way ahead of any other country as far as quality of life, & still maintain a kick ass military.

  8. Having been in both the tiny home & mobile home industry, I would like to warn folks that neither are like RVs in the way that RVs were made to be in motion. Every time you up & move a tiny home or mobile home, you’ll have significant repairs to make. And the longer they have sat, the more repairs will need to be made. And I’d suggest renting a space the size you’re thinking of building or purchasing before hand. Most Americans have no concept of “tiny”. Our tiny homes were literally smaller than a quad cab truck. Also, most counties have fire & health codes that require minimum square footage of living space, kitchen space, sleeping space, & bathroom space.

  15. I keep remembering my dad who always said that he came into this world with nothing & he could leave with nothing, & so he did. But in between, he had amassed a small fortune, but never required much in the way of material items. I’d recommend starting imagining an uncluttered camper, maybe start with what’s broken or no longer usable (trash), paper clutter & possibly sentimental stuff, take photos & that will probably help with letting go. Then take ten minutes a couple times a day to decide on 5 items. With each one ask yourself what would happen if you didn’t have it six months from now. Will it still be useable, when/if ever needed? Would you remember it or would you be able to find it? Is there a way you could replace it by repurposing something from off the street or a resale shop, if you should need it? If you ask, people are usually happy to help & even refer you to some resources. There is an abundance of stuff out there.

  22. Ya never know. I’ve been working in the great outdoors for 50 years. Never missed a day of work until 7 weeks ago, when I came down with a fever for 10 days. Then something went haywire with my shoulder & certain moves are excruciating. Now I find out that shoulder pain is common in women 40-68 yrs old… something like 80% of us will experience it. My mother had a frozen shoulder for nearly 2 yrs, which is just about average. 3-6 yrs isn’t unheard of. Thankfully a frozen shoulder doesn’t seem to be my issue, & it’s slowly getting better with physical therapy.

  39. I’m just over 60 & everyone I know would like to downsize, but either way, it’s just not very cost effective, even with maintenance & taxes increases every year. My house is under 900 sf with over an acre. I’m in total disbelief seeing the average cost of everyday vehicles are twice as much as what I gave for my place. Anyway, I’m just extremely grateful that I wasn’t born any later than what I was.

  41. My bf used to travel quite a bit across the US, hauling antiques for 50 years, he said the best insurance was to buy a new van battery every year, whether you needed a new one or not. I’m much more frugal because I’ve had an expensive Die Hard that lasted well over a decade (I don’t believe they make em like that anymore). The one I’m using now is 4, & I plane to have it checked out by the auto parts store, before investing in a new one.

  44. 30 years ago I lived in small neighborhood that was an even mix mobile homes & traditional brick homes. Most took pride in their homes & yards, but there’s always one trashy apple. I fed the landlord’s acquired animals out of burnt up skillets (thx dad!) bc he would be gone for days at a time to his other properties. Damn neighbors stole every one of those pans. Had they ever said that they were in need of pans, I’d given them a nice set, since I only use one small & one medium.

My neighbor was a sweet little lady, then one day she just became enraged, & it lasted until her death in 2021. Reminded me of The Exorcist, but her caretaker said it was because she would only watch a certain “news” channel all day. Guess it made her feel like she was participating in life, to some degree.

Unfortunately I’m not able to help because the city annexed my place years ago.. & now that they offer some city services, the city’s initial fees are double what the contractors are wanting.   86. As a lifelong animal advocate & 50 years of petsitting, I can’t imagine anything more stressful than being on the road full time with an untrained dog. For a more stress-free lifestyle, start training how to walk on a leash & come when called as soon as pet is acquired. Don’t train for more than 15 minutes at a time, but daily consistency is a must, & separate from any distractions. I trained a wild feral dog, that had ran with a pack for over a year, by working with her 3x a day for 3 weeks… also, I lost an average of a pound a day. The first week I swore she was getting worse, but by the third week, no one could believe it was the same dog.

  95. A friend of mine has been on the road 14 years, he comes back to Texas every January, where he remains for a month or two. He always reports back who’s all parked at the camp grounds. It appears, in the mid west, it’s lots of poor families. In Texas, the majority of rv parks don’t allow any rigs over 10 yrs old, & they get premium prices for their spots; $600 & up. Electric’s extra.

  121. We have an older tiny church that has a clothing donation drop & they make sure anyone in need receives it, & sells any leftovers for $1 a bag. There’s another that’s slightly larger that handles food donations & partners with a resale for pet food donations. Then there’s one that opens its doors whenever the weather’s severe, the pastor ask police not to bother anyone who is asleep on the steeps or parking lot. All 3 barely have any parking. But just half a mile down, there’s door to door mega churches for at least an 11 mile stretch, & with 1-3 acre landscaped parking lots that are barricaded 156 hours a week. The oldest actually has 12 RV hookups… reserved for family.

  133. Y’all be careful with that. I had a nice canister with a leather hostler for like 3 years… one rainy night I was awakened by a hiss & a crash. Lay frozen, listening, thinking someone had broken in… then I began to choke & my eyes were burning… the canister had disintegrated & went airborne across the room, hitting a mirror. By the time I was able to access what had happened, one of the worst electrical storms I’ve ever experienced began & I had to brave it to get out of my small house. It was 48 hours before it wore off enough.

  139. Share this with everyone who ask for $$. I didn’t have an allowance until I was 11 yrs old, & it was a nickel a week, & that’s how I learned to live on dime. But I’ve come to realize that budgeting isn’t intuitive. There’s a young veteran who was down to nothing & living in his car, with help he was able to get an RV. After about 2 months I showed him a job listing 2 blocks away. He got the job & is really happy with it. I’ve offered to take him to the laundromat where I spend $3 to wash & dry a load of clothes, but he prefers to the newest laundromat that’s no less than $10 a load. I wouldn’t mention this but, because he’s out of money every 3 weeks, he ask that I bring him food, which I can barely afford my own.

As he said, “It’s an investment in, not only in the children’s future, but the nation as a whole.”. He was able to repay way more back in bc of the federally funded education & food that he received as a child. Basically about to be in your situation, even though I was fortunate enough to find a place owner financed & being extremely frugal, a bout with cancer left me with no savings, unable to maintain it, & city encroachment is such that I’m unable to afford to bring it up to code — city wants more than I paid for the place to access services. So to sell, might leave me with enough to find a reliable car.   216. I had sciatica from standing & pulling heavy pallets uphill every day. Thankfully I met a massage therapist who did an hour session. The first 5 minutes I nearly passed out from the pain… thankfully, he refused to stop. A few days later I got another hour session, & haven’t had to have anymore other than 5 minutes every few weeks that I administer to myself. Never taken anything harder than Motrin… which I haven’t taken in over 20 years. I do recommend vitamin D3, tho. I’ve recommended massage to 5 who suffered with sciatica, & it has worked for them. One had a chiropractor that used TENS, & two sessions has worked without having to return. Edit: my massage therapist said that 30 minute sessions only aggravates it more. Best to do an hour or more. As I understand, TENS is less time consuming.

As soon as I started pumping fuel, a lady approached & before she could say “Do you have…” I screamed “NO!”, & she ran & got into a vehicle that was 12 years newer than my old beater. Normally I ask them a billion questions until they give up & try an easier mark, but a loud, firm “NO!”, sends them packing. It was great practice for when I pulled into a desserted station in the middle of nowhere & a car full of people pulled in close behind, a woman & man got out, approached with “Do you know god?”.

  277. Right. I earned $18/hr in 1980 for unskilled labor, in TX, while the guys were earning $20-$23 for the same job. Strange how earnings have remained stagnant, while everything else has continued to rise, along with hundreds of imposed fees.

Came out of Walmart after dark the other night, with my usual $20 worth, hadn’t eaten all day, when a well dressed lady complete with jewelry & manicured nails stopped me with a cart full of groceries & a McDonald’s frappé. Claiming her husband was in jail for domestic battery after knocking her teeth out, & her & the kids were staying in a hotel… she wanted a contribution in order to stay another night. Might have a better chance asking someone who’s able to afford McDonald’s.

There were two that I knew of in the tiny town I grew up in, both are still operating, even tho the founders have long since passed. Found out through one of the founders son, & the other by a good friend who had been enslaved. 40 years ago, while staying in a resort town, a man escaped terrible conditions & torture, to report that there were 11 more being held against their will. Not so long ago there was a major meat supplier that had enslaved mentally challenged people under horrific conditions. None of which were reimbursed.

  304. Very true. I cringe wherever I hear women , who cannot afford rent, so determined to have a baby before their biological clock runs out. None of them appear to be healthy enough to survive childbirth, little on raise a child. And I get it, I really do, bc when I turned 41, I was dating an older man who had a good job with the state, & he was begging me to have his child, & I was thinking, “its now or never”. Thankfully I came to my senses in a matter of a week, & 22 years later, I’ve never been more grateful. Every. Single. Day. Grateful. Every time I get on fb to see if anyone has a request for something I may have, there’s as many as 5 young girls asking for diapers or formula, & most are already pregnant again or have more than one in diapers. The future is not looking good for these young mothers, & even less so for their children:

  305. Please find a somewhat newer vehicle. Chrysler has always been difficult to find parts for, and any vehicle 2006 & older are becoming extremely difficult to get parts for. Long story short: you can order them new, but they’re made so cheaply, they arrive broken or break during installation. Best place to look is someone you know, like a neighbor or a mechanic. And if you can, Honda or Toyota, both are quality vehicles. Just say “no” to any high dollar maker, like BMW, not even for free, because you must go through them for high dollar maintenance & repairs, otherwise, they will never touch it after anyone else.

  307. Thank your lucky stars you have electricity & water to cut back on. I have some solar & somewhat of a roof over my head, so I count myself fortunate. However, I won’t ever live long enough to afford the $15K the city wants for water access. Even if they had pity on me, a plumber is another $17K or more. On the brighter side; me living in a vehicle isn’t going to be that much of a stretch.
